Do you have any used paint, motor oil, batteries, old computers or household or lawn chemicals around your house? If so, you may want to mark April 10 on your calendar. The Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority, along with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the City of Oxford will be sponsoring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on this date to help you dispose of these items safely.
The collection day is set for Saturday, April 10 at the Oxford Conference Center. The event will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.
This free collection and disposal service is for all residents in Lee, Monroe, Calhoun, Itawamba, Lafayette, Pontotoc and Union Counties. No commercial waste will be accepted.
An EPA-certified environmental company will be collecting paint/thinners, aerosol cans, anti-freeze, herbicides, pesticides, pool chemicals and many other items. Young Oil Service will collect used motor oil, automotive transmission fluid, oil filters and other petroleum-based products. Also, medical wastes such as used needles will be collected. PLEASE DO NOT BRING TRASH ITEMS SUCH AS OLD TVs, SOFAS, ROOFING SHINGLES, ETC.
Ironically, many items that people think must be brought to Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day can be disposed of by more convenient means. For example, latex paint can safely be disposed of in household trash as long as the contents of the paint can are dry and solid. When you are finished with a can of latex paint, either give the remaining contents to a friend who has a painting job or open the lid and put the can with the remaining paint outside and out of reach of children and pets. After the sun evaporates the water remaining in the can and the contents dry out, the container can be tossed into your household garbage.
