Five Chargers qualify for State

Oxford High placed five lifters in next month’s MHSAA state meet after earning qualifying results in Friday’s Class 5A North Half championships at Ridgeland. Eleven lifters competed in the meet and OHS finished third as a team overall.

DeAndre “Bobo” Patrick topped the Charger lifters with a first-place finish in the super heavyweight division. DeMarcus Brown finished second in 123 division. Darius Montgomery was third in 114 class, while Jon O. Fisher and Dondre Gatlin both finished third in the 308 and 132 classes respectively. All five lifters advanced to the upcoming state meet at Mississippi Coliseum on April 17. Making it for the girls team were Ann Crabtree, Tony Toles, Urika Williams and Nikki Grilliette.

“I am very proud of all of our lifters that qualified for the state meet,” OHS coach Jason Russell said. “They have worked very hard this year and it is nice to see the hard work paying off. I am happy to see their progress and I am looking forward to a great showing at the state championships.” (March 15, 2010)
