Double Decker: Prepare to party
The Oxford Convention and Visitors Bureau has released its full music lineup for the 15th annual Double Decker Arts Festival on April 24. Gifted program IQ standard rises
Oxford students are going to have to be a little smarter next year if they want to be labeled as “gifted.” The Oxford School Board has approved raising the IQ standard for the program from 120 to 125. School district officials say the change will help teachers better serve the district’s most gifted kids while also helping with overcrowding in those classrooms. (February 26, 2010, Page 1A)
Dance company: For students, by students
A group of students at the University of Mississippi have formed a dance company which allows them to create, stage and market their own productions. Known as the Hinge Dance Company, the members of the group will be performing their latest production, “Opaque,” this weekend. (February 26, 2010, Page 6A)
Thacker Mountain Radio with Jimmy McDonough
Jimmy McDonough will be on Thacker Mountain Radio reading his new book Tammy Wynette, broadcasted live from Off Square Books at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 11. Shirley Jones, A Night at the Oscars
Tuesday, March 2, 8 p.m. Shirley Jones will perform some of her most memorable songs from the many movie musicals in which she starred over her career including “Music Man,” “Oklahoma” and “Carousel.” Performing with Ms. Jones is The Hollywood Concert Orchestra, an ensemble of America’s finest musicians which is rapidly becoming one of the premier ensembles in the world. Oxford Conference for the Book
The 17th Oxford Conference for the Book, set for March 4–6, will be dedicated to the late Barry Hannah, one of Mississippi’s most distinguished contemporary writers. The author of nine novels and four collections of short stories, and the recipient of the Award in Literature from the American Institute of Arts and Letters, Hannah was writer in residence and director of the MFA program in creative writing at the University of Mississippi. Conference sessions on Saturday will discuss his life and work. Confirmed speakers are William Dunlap and Noel Polk on a panel of “Survivors of Geronimo Rex”; fiction writers Tom Franklin and Amy Hempel; Daniel E. Williams, who taught the first course on Hannah’s work; and his former students Anne Rapp and Cynthia Shearer. (February 25, 2010)
