Children’s concert

Wednesday, March 10, 11:30 a.m. at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the University of Mississippi. The program will feature Giuseppe Verdi’s “Overture to Les Vespres Sciliennes,” Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” and Don Freund’s “Three Preludes.” Admission is free to area school children. Part of a series of orchestra concerts especially for students in elementary grades. The programs, under the direction of Ronald Vernon, featuring faculty and advanced student performers, are drawn from the Music Department’s regular-season programming, but with special introductions and commentary designed to help young people understand and appreciate the music. (February 26, 2010)

Friday’s obituaries

• Maj. Jon Gregory Martin — 39, of Wilmington, N.C., died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmington. Burial will follow at Wilmington National Cemetery with full military honors. Johnson Funeral Home in Jacksonville, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

‘Miss-I-Sippin’ Beer and Food Tasting

Thursday, March 25, 7-9 p.m., at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center. Fundraiser for the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council features 16 beers paired with fine foods by Chef Craven. Kitty Snacks Release Party Issue #3

The party will coincide with this year’s Oxford Conference for the Book, which is dedicated to Barry Hannah. In honor of Hannah, several of his books will be raffled off and John Oliver Hodges will be performing a musical rendition of Hannah’s novel, “Ray.” Jane Rule Burdine, Ward Long and John Oliver Hodges will have photographs on display. There will also be readings by featured authors, refreshments and a raffle for prizes including tickets to a show at The Lyric Oxford and records from Fat Possum Records. Admission to the party is $5 to drink and hang out, and $10 to also receive a copy of the magazine. There will also be books from several of the featured authors and limited edition prints by Jane Rule Burdine for sale. (February 26, 2010)

Lady ‘Dores focused on winning title

Last season Last season Lafayette girls basketball coach Amy Sutton took her team to the Mississippi Coliseum to watch the MHSAA Class 4A title game. That trip has paid off as the Lady Commodores get set to play for the Class 4A title Monday night against Raymond. (February 26, 2010, Page 9A)

Late rebound seals Ole Miss’ win

Make no mistake about it, the Ole Miss Lady Rebels are on the outside looking in as far as the NCAA Tournament is concerned.
