County gets grant to clean up illegal dumps

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has awarded Lafayette County a solid waste assistance grant of $18,108 that will be used by the county for funding assistance for a local solid waste enforcement officer and for cleanup of unauthorized dumps. (January 20, 2010, Page 2)

UM to buy Campus Walk

Campus Walk apartments may become student housing this fall for the University of Mississippi campus, as a two-stage purchase proposal is pending before the College Board. The state College Board is expected to approve the deal at its meeting this week in Jackson. The University of Mississippi Foundation will buy and lease the property to UM until March 2012. (January 20, 2010, Page 1)

Festival lineup in place

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings will headline the 2010 Double Decker Arts Festival on April 24. Other bands in the lineup include Jimbo Mathus, Those Darlins, Wiley and the Checkmates, American Aquarium, The Felice Brothers and Groupo Fantasma. Abbeville works toward restoration

About 40 local volunteers gathered Monday at the old Gordon School in Abbeville to clean up the building in preparation for it to be restored. Neighborhood unites to save duck

Residents of the Wellsgate neighborhood banned together to help free a duck named Lovie from being trapped in ice along the lake’s edge. Lovie was one of three birds dropped off as ducklings last Easter who have made their home in the neighborhood. (January 19, 2010, Page 16)
